Honey Moisturiser is a conditioning agent derived from natural honey. Known for its humectant properties achieved through a chemical modification process that allows honey to form a quaternary cationic polymer, it attracts and retains moisture more efficiently than glycerin, making it perfect for hydration focused formulations in various cosmetics and personal care products. It is also approved for use in both US and EU and is available as a quaternised honey derivative.
This multi-use liquid ingredient moisturises and nourishes dry skin and softens hair even during dry combing. It’s positively charged (cationic) so it binds to negatively charged surfaces like the hair shaft or damaged skin barrier, resulting in longer conditioning benefits due to its substantive properties that provides moisture and shine over time.
It’s perfect for hydration focused formulations due to its excellent moisture binding capabilities and low molecular weight that allows it to penetrate hair and provide long lasting benefits.
The formula is compatible with surfactant systems, so it can be added to shampoos, body washes and cleansers without reducing foam, making it a great option for products that require both hydration and lather. Its versatility extends to both rinse-off and leave-on formulations, giving a luxurious feel and a smooth finish. Honey Moisturiser may vary slightly from batch to batch in colour and scent—pale straw to amber in colour and faint to noticeable in aroma. This is normal and due to the natural origin.
How to Use
Skin Care
- As a humectant, it adds moisture to the skin and helps keep it well-hydrated.
- It is twice as effective as glycerin and, when used in creams and lotions, gives a soft and silky skin feel.
- In hand and body lotions, it leaves the skin feeling nourished and well cared for.
- Use it in toners, as it softens the skin and keeps it well-hydrated.
- Makes a useful addition to cleansers as is softens the skin, leaving it more receptive to products used afterwards.
- When used in gel serums, it makes the skin more pliable.
- When used in body wash products, it leaves a pleasant sensation on the skin and increases moisture absorption.
- Use in shower gels as it keeps the skin soft and supple.
Hair Care
- It is moisturising to the hair shaft, so use it in shampoos as it has a low molecular weight that enables it to penetrate deep into the hair cuticle, keeping it hydrated and cleaner for a longer time.
- As a substantive, it improves the hair structure, adding thickness and volume, making it excellent to use for fine, flyaway hair.
- It can be used in conditioners as well as in shampoos.
- It conditions the hair very well and can be used in rinse-off as well as leave-on hair conditioners.
- It gives good, tangle-free wet combing and can help to stop dry and curly hair from getting frizzy. It penetrates easily and helps to strengthen hair.
- Use it in hair cream packs and gel-based serums. It is especially good in damaged repair products to help improve the texture of bleached, dyed and permed hair.
- Use it to improve the lustre and shine in all hair products as it smooths the hair shaft, also helping to improve the appearance of split ends.
- Use in hair styling products, either rinse off or leave on, as it reduces static electricity when dry combing.
Other
- Use at 2% to 5%. Water soluble, so it cannot be used in oil-only products.
- Add in the Stage 3 (cool down phase) of creams and lotions under 40°C.
- Depending on your formulation, it may thin the finished product slightly when it is added.
- If you find this happening, formulate the initial product to be slightly thicker to compensate.

"my experience of this product was awful. The slight "aroma" is a very fishy smell that completely overpowers the product you're making. It ruined a compete batch of face serum I made and no matter how much essential oils you've added to it, the strength of those neat oils will not overpower it. I could not send it out to my customers and my thought it was disgusting, as did I. Needless to say, I went in the round filing cabinet . . . . . the bin. Expensive error on my part for not reading the description thoroughly enough. But in my difference, AROMANTIC did say. . . . "The aroma can also vary from batch to batch, having a slight fishy or amino note. The aroma can vary from being very faint to very strong. This is also down to the person smelling it as cationic ingredients can come across smelling very strong to some while others can't smell it at all". I know I have a very sensitive nose, being an Aromatherapist, but I am not the only one. I think AROMANTIC should put more of a warning of the smell, as you cannot return a product. Very disappointed as I have been very happy with their products on the whole."

Aromantic were contacted and stated- Cationic ingredients like the Honey Moisturiser can have a 'fishy' smell due to the ammonium salt content. No offer of a refund or exchange. Needless to say, it's gone in the bin!!"

- I have a problem with the Honey Moisturiser when I use it in making a cream. I always make sure to add it correctly when the cream i below 40 degrees but every time I add it - even though I add it very slowly - the cream separates. It happens as soon as I add just very small amount at a time. I hope you can help me as I have always loved using it to my product. Thank you and best regards Paula Eriksen
- Thank you for your enquiry. Please see the below response from our R&D Team; It's difficult to say without more information. For example, have they used the honey moisturiser in the same recipe before with no problems? If this is the case, then try mixing the honey moisturiser with a small amount of water before adding it to the formulation. If it hasn't been used before then what other ingredients are in the recipe? It would also be important to make sure that both the formulation and the honey moisturiser are at the same temperature when adding the honey moisturiser to the formula. Even relatively small differences in temperature can "shock" the formulation and lead to separation.
