Skin Care
An oil with an exceptionally high content of Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA) - minimum amount 12-14% - a substance the body needs to create prostaglandins. A dry, thin oil that is easily absorbed by the skin. Evening primrose oil penetrates down and into the skin, which as a result becomes softer and is less prone to eczema and acne. It has a moisture-retaining effect, prevents drying of the skin, increases the cells’ ability to absorb oxygen and to withstand disease. Evening primrose oil and other oils containing GLA are not a miracle cure but can help to support the body’s own functioning to maintain good health.
Evening primrose oil is cold pressed from the seeds of the evening primrose flower and is a dry, thin oil that is easily absorbed by the skin. The oil is a good source of omega 6 fatty acids and contains a very different ratio of fatty acids as well as a high quantity of Gamma Linolenic Acid (GLA), which is a very rare fatty acid found in evening primrose oil (8-12%), borage oil (16-24%) blackcurrant seed oil (approximately 6%). Gamma linolenic acid (GLA) is a Duounsaturated fatty acid closely related to the essential fatty acid, linoleic acid. Both are substances the body needs to create prostaglandins.
The skin needs prostaglandins and deficiencies will cause dryness, loss of suppleness and wrinkling. The skin will age more quickly and be less tolerant to sunlight and any damage to the skin will take longer to heal. Gamma linolenic acid is very well researched.
Important note: My practical work over the years has shown me that it is necessary to add at least 5% of evening primrose oil to a blend, otherwise it does not work at all.
In the kitchen
Similar properties to borage oil but with a more pleasant smell and taste and has no contraindications for taking internally as borage does. Due to its high quantity of GLA, evening primrose oil should never be heated over 40°C/104°F. Use if you want to get a GLA boost, add it to your dressings. (Instead of using GLA capsules, simply add 2ml of evening primrose oil in a teaspoon and take with your food everyday or add approximately 20ml of the evening primrose oil to 80ml of sunflower and other oils to make a dressing for salads or vegetables. This is a good and cheaper alternative to paying for expensive capsules

Rich GLA source for different skin types
Evening primrose oil is often blended with rosehip and thistle oils, as these oils are both thin, dry and easily absorbed by the skin. This blend is ideal for oily, sensitive and large-pored skin.
Evening primrose is the best GLA-rich oil for sensitive skin types and acne-prone skin as it is softer on the skin than the GLA-rich borage oil. Evening primrose oil has a more neutral smell than borage oil but borage has double the amount of GLA than evening primrose oil.
