What is it?

Made from the stones of the organic fruit of the Shea Butter Tree, which grows wild in West Africa. This lovely organic Shea Butter comes from the same women’s community project in northern Ghana as our filtered organic shea butter (SKU: 3053). The organic shea butters that Aromantic get from Ghana go through an initial filtering process with a fine cloth to remove any impurities, this is followed by a final cold filtering and deodorising (removingthe smell) process in Holland. This means that you can keep our Shea Butter for 2 years, and not only 2-3 months. Some of our customers prefer a deodorised (smell removed) shea butter for their products.

Skin Care

Used in Creams, Sun Creams, Lotions and Massage Oils. Good for moisturising, protecting and healing the skin, especially dry and damaged skin. It contains 5-10% phytosterol, which stimulates cell growth.

Cooking

Shea Butter is also used as a cooking oil and has a melting point of 35°C.

Important notes about the making of Shea Butter

The Shea stones (nuts) are crushed and the butter is pressed out by boiling water. After cooling down, the oil thickens into a butter-like consistency.  Then the free fatty acids and substances prone to oxidisation are removed leaving a Fat, which is stable and pure.

Aromantic's Shea Butter is white, has a very similar consistency to Cocoa Butter and has a mild smell. Many shops in the UK selling products from Africa sell the Shea Butter that has not had the free fatty acids removed by a more industrial unit. This makes the Shea Butter prone to going rancid quickly. The way to identify this type of Shea Butter is by the strong and rancid smell and colour, usually grey, dark grey or yellowish. Avoid it. In Africa it is OK to use this type of Shea Butter as they use it straight away so that it will not have the opportunity to go rancid.

The free fatty acid content of Shea Butter should be less than 2%. The lower the free fatty acid content, the better the quality. The problem is that small village projects and companies in Africa seem not to have the technology to sufficiently clean the free fatty acids from the Shea Butter product. The Organic Shea Butter that Aromantic get from Ghana goes through a final cleansing process in Holland. So you can therefore keep our Shea Butter for 2 years, and not only 2-3 months.

The non-lathering part of Shea Butter consists of up to 65% of cinnamic acid esters, which gives Shea Butter its healing properties and 5-10% phytosterols, and are known to be active in stimulating the formation and growth of new cells. Shea Butter is anti-inflammatory and we consider it to be the most healing of all fats.
