INCI Name
What is it? Emulsifan CB is an opaque, non-odourous water-into-oil emulsifying wax especially made to be used for making products such as creams and lotions containing large amounts of essential oils (above 5%) and larger amounts of vegetable oils/fats (above 40%) in creams and lotions. Whereas many emulsifiers would not hold the emulsion together, Emulsifan CB remains effective even when these high percentages of vegetable and essential oils are used in products.
Ingredients sourced from Sourced from mineral oil, but apart from being a non-renewable source, it does not clog the pores as does Vaseline or paraffin oils.
Benefits Remains effective even when high percentages of vegetable and essential oils are used in products. Very good to use in Massage Lotions. Using Emulsifan CB allows you to make Creams and Lotions with excellent moisturising and lubricating properties due to the high content of vegetable oils; as well being able to add water-soluble ingredients as a pure Massage Oil Blend could not possibly contain any water-soluble ingredients. So, by using Emulsifan CB, you can add many more active raw materials to your clients skin, e.g. moisturisers, Vitamin C, etc and you can have the benefits of a Massage Oil and Cream in one product! Lotions with Emulsifan CB are not designed for easy/quick absorption the high amounts of fats/oils means that the Lotion will be slowly absorbed by the skin, which is perfect for Peeling-Cleansing Lotions that remove surface dirt and impurities from the skin or Massage Lotions, which need to keep the lubricating properties to glide over the skin before it is slowly absorbed by the skin. It emulsifies large amounts of tinctures/alcohols (over 20% of overall content). It is efficient also in Peeling products, in which you usually want to use larger amounts vegetable oils and detergents, which creates a thin emulsion or an emulsion that separates easily. Produces stable emulsions that dont separate easily. Which products to use it in Rich Lotions with over 40% fat/oil content, including the emulsifiers. Excellent in Massage Lotions, which need to contain a large amount of vegetable oils. Liniment Lotions, which contain more than 5% of essential oils. Peeling/Cleansing Lotions. Water- or oil-soluble? Water- or oil-soluble but it is important that you follow the method and add the Water Stage ingredients INTO the Fat Stage ingredients as it is a Water-in-Oil Emulsifier (W/O Emulsion).
Recommended dosages and how to use in products Thicker Lotions: 6%. Add Beeswax or Cocoa Butter to Emulsifan CB Thick Lotions as a stabiliser Beeswax: 1.4-1.6% or Cocoa Butter: 2-3% Lotions (including Peeling Lotions): 4-5%. Add Beeswax or Cocoa Butter to Emulsifan CB Lotions as a stabiliser Beeswax: 0.5-1.5% or Cocoa Butter: 1-2% Restrictions using Emulsifan CB As this is a product that is often used together with beeswax in products, be aware that beeswax can clog and enlarge skin pores so avoid using products containing beeswax on the face, large-pored, acne-prone or oily skin. Dont use it to make creams as creams made with Emulsifan CB will always have a waxy skin feeling its best use is for making rich Lotions and not to use them on the face. Lotions with Emulsifan CB are not designed for easy/quick absorption, so not ideal for normal beauty skin lotions the high amounts of fats/oils means that the Lotion will be slowly absorbed by the skin, which is perfect for Peeling-Cleansing Lotions, which need to remove surface dirt and impurities from the skin or Massage Lotions, which need to keep the lubricating properties to glide over the skin before it is slowly absorbed by the skin. Storage 2-3 years (see label for actual best before date). Store cool and dark.

Basic method for making water-in-oil emulsion Lotions Heat the fat stage in a double boiler (a saucepan immersed in a larger saucepan of water) until all the ingredients have melted and the temperature has risen to 75-80°C. Heat the water stage in a saucepan to the same temperature. Very important procedure: add the water stage to the fat stage pouring slowly in a thin, steady stream while beating the mixture all the time. Keep the lotion/cream mixture warm (keep water in the bottom pan of double boiler hot) and beat in the bottom of the saucepan from side to side for a further 5-10 minutes, using a spatula to scrape the mixture from the sides of the pan. Allow the lotion/cream to cool (you can speed this up by immersing the pan into a large pan of cold water), stirring all the time. It is important to touch the bottom of the pan as you stir so as not to introduce air into the cream. Starting at 40°C certain active ingredients (third stage) are added. Add the thicker ingredients first. Continue stirring until the mixture has cooled to 35-25°C, then mix in the essential oils thoroughly. Pour into bottles and label. Troubleshooting Lotions made with Emulsifan CB The main thing is that you follow the method and pour the Water Stage into the Fat Stage as it is a water-in-oil emulsion (W/O). If you find the lotion mixture too thick, just mix a little water and extra Preservative - add approximately 2 drops of Preservative for each 10ml of water you added. Mix it when heated for 5 minutes both stages together. Always fat stage into water stage as it is an oil-in-water emulsion. The story of Axelsons Massage Lotion 26 years ago I myself (Kolbjorn) was a student in the largest Swedish massage school in the world, Axelsons Institute in Stockholm, Sweden. Later, when starting my skin care factory in Sweden, I was asked to remake the formula for their well-known Axelsons massage lotion. The whole idea of an oily lotion is that it is both a cream and oil in one. It took me one and a half years to develop this product so that they were satisfied as every massage student would get one of these lotions when they started to study as an oily lotion can offer so many more benefits than a base oil mixture.
Good luck and enjoy making your creams and lotions!
