Buy VE Emulsifier benefits uses UK

INCI Name

NB
Glyceryl Stearate

What is it?

It is an Emulsifier used together with MF Emulsifier and Cetyl Alcohol to make Oil-in-Water Emulsions such as Creams and Lotions.

VE Emulsifier is qualified to be used as a non-organic raw material in organic creams and lotions. It is a fail-safe, vegetable-based emulsifier for creams and lotions, which amateurs and professionals alike will find extremely easy to use. It produces a professional cosmetic product that you can use personally, tailor make for your clients, or sell to the public.

VE Emulsifier needs to be used in combination with MF Emulsifier and Cetyl Alcohol. See them for more information.

NB! Always use VE in the Fat Stage of the cream recipes; it produces a professional cosmetic product. See relevant Recipe Brochures or Books for recipes for Creams and Lotions or scroll down the page for some free recipes.

Both VE and MF are used as emulsifiers to make vegan ice cream in the Scandinavian Food Industry. This shows that they are both very safe emulsifiers to use as they are edible.

Ethically sourced ingredients

The Palm oil that is used in both in MF/VE emulsifiers comes from suppliers that are either members of the Round Table of Sustainable Palm Oil or a subsidiary company or who are members of FEDIOL which supports sustainability. FEDIOL is a European industry federation based in Brussels. VE Emulsifier (Glyceryl Stearate) - Mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids (E471) based on Sustainable Palm oil from Malaysia, Indonesia, Columbia or Papua New Guinea.

Benefits

  • Easy to use Emulsifier.
  • Safe, non-GMO Emulsifier from food industry.
  • Produces stable emulsions that don’t easily separate.
  • Qualified to use in organic creams and lotions.

Which products to use it in

  • Creams and Lotions with up to 40% fat/oil content as above that the emulsion will eventually separate.
  • Peeling Creams and Lotions
  • Cream/Lotion-based Cleans
  • Exfoliating Creams
  • Cream Face Masks

Water- or oil-soluble?

Oil-soluble. It needs always to be added and heated in Oil Stage, if not, the cream/lotion will not function well.

Recommended dosages and how to use in products

  • Lotions: 1-1.5%
  • Oily skin creams: 1.5-2%
  • Normal skin creams: 2-2.5%
  • Dry skin creams: 2.5-3%
  • Conversion information: 1g of VE Emulsifier=approx. 2ml

Restrictions using MF/VE Emulsifers

  • Do not use when adding more than 40% of fats/oils to your products. If you do, the emulsion can easily separate over time.
  • The Cream/Lotion will become very heavy when using very large amounts of Active Ingredients in Stage 3 of the Cream Recipe. Don’t use over 3% Vitamin E in VE/MF Creams as the Cream will not be light but will have a heavy appearance and feeling on the skin.

Storage

2 years (see label for actual best before date). Store cool and dark.

Related/Synergistic products

Must be used with

MF Emulsifier and Cetyl Alcohol.

To make a Cream lighter and fluffier

Add 10-20% Aloe Vera Gel to a cream with MF/VE Emulsifiers as it makes it lighter, fluffier and gives a very nice skin feeling. When using Aloe Vera Gel use a pourable gel consistency and remember to reduce the amount of water in the Water Stage with the same amount of Gel that you add in the final stage of making the cream. Add the gel little by little, until the cream is the consistency that you would like.

Method for making Creams made with MF & VE Emulsifiers and Cetyl Alcohol

  1. Fat Stage: Heat the fat stage ingredients in a double boiler using a SMALL bowl until all the ingredients have melted and the temperature has risen to above 75˚C. There is no need to use a whisk at this stage. Only when the temperature has been reached, start stage 2.

  2. Water Stage: After boiling the spring water in a kettle, measure it according to the recipe and pour it over the other raw materials, which you have put in the LARGE bowl.

  3. Whisk the water stage ingredients well together making sure that that the MF Emulsifier powder is fully dissolved in the water and that you don't have any lumps. Then put the large bowl in a double boiler and let the temperature rise to above 75˚C. When both stages are above 75˚C pour the fat stage into the water stage. Ensure the temperature is still above 75˚C.

  4. Now continuously whisk the mixture from side to side for 5 minutes. Do NOT aerate the mixture. Keep the temperature up and by leaving the bowl in the saucepan.

  5. After the 5 minutes the mixture needs to be cooled down. Keep stirring and put the bowl in a saucepan of COLD water. As it cools down, the mixture thickens up and becomes a cream. It will reach its thickest consistency when it reaches room temperature.

  6. Third Stage: When the mixture has cooled to under 40˚C, stir in the third stage ingredients.

  7. Fourth Stage: Add the Aloe Vera Gel, if using, little by little. If not using the gel, add essential oil, according to recipe

  8. Fifth Stage: Stir in the Essential oils.

  9. Pour the cream into jars and label.

Adapting Cream Recipes and Method to make Lotions

If you have made a bigger amount of a Cream Recipe and you would now like to make a Lotion, you can take 100ml of the Cream and add 100ml cold Spring Water, little by little, whisking all the while. As the last step, add approximately 2 drops of Preservative for each 10ml of water you added. For example, if you added 500ml extra water, you would need to add 100 drops of Preservative.

Simple Base Lotion Recipe

If you want to make a Lotion from scratch, this recipe is an excellent and simple base recipe.

Fat Stage (75-80°C)

3ml/g Sunflower Oil
3ml/g Apricot Kernel Oil
0.5g Cetyl Alcohol
1.5g VE Emulsifier

Water Stage (75-80°C)

2.5g MF Emulsifier
85ml Spring Water
3ml/g Glycerine

Third Stage (40-35°C)

0.5ml/g Vitamin E (undiluted)
1ml/g/25 drops Preservative 12 OR
1ml/g/20 drops Preservative Eco

Fourth Stage (35-25°C)

10-15 drops Essential Oil

Method for making Lotions

See Method for making Creams made with MF & VE Emulsifiers and Cetyl Alcohol.

Troubleshooting Creams/Lotions

An MF/VE/Cetyl Alcohol cream will more or less always be successful as long as you follow these guidelines:

  • Follow the recipe.
  • Heat it to above 75 Deg C.
  • Mix it when heated for 5 minutes both stages together.
  • Always fat stage into water stage as it is an oil-in-water emulsion.

If the cream turns out to be more like a lotion:

  • You possibly measured wrongly.
  • It wasn’t heated to over 75 Deg C.
  • Too much detergent was added if you were making a peeler
  • Or too many tinctures were added

If the cream has become a lotion (and you were trying to make a cream!) you can save it by:

  • Reheating the whole cream and if you have measured right you will make your cream. Make sure that the cream heats to over 75 Deg C and mix it for 5 minutes before cooling when you reheat the cream.
  • If you realise that you added too little of the either products MF/VE or Cetyl Alcohol, add the approximate amount that you that was left out and reheat and you will make your cream.
  • If the cream is just a little too runny you can just whisk with an electric blender for a few minutes in the cream/lotion and just that can thicken it up.
  • If the cream is still a little too runny you can sprinkle up to 0.5% Xanthan gum over the cream and at the same time whisk with an electric blender. Sprinkle little by little until you get the right consistency.
  • Buy a better set of scales – don’t use kitchen scales that can only go down to 5g.

Good luck and enjoy making your creams and lotions!
