INCI Name
C14-22 Alkyl Alcohol, C12-20 Alkyl Glycoside
What is it? This is an Emulsifier that is very natural compared to the chemical Emulsifiers usually used for Sprays. Emulsifier L is an Emulsifier especially suited for Sprays and Lotions. We classify it as an ecological Emulsifier. Lotions made with Emulsifier L can be as thin as milk, which makes them suitable for Sprays. The thickness depends on the quantity of solid Fats you use. It has a melting point of 66-72 degrees Celsius.
Ingredients sourced from 100% vegetable origin from sustainable resources. Original and patented synthesis of fatty alcohols (from palm oil, coconut oil, rapeseed) and glucosides (from corn [certified GMO-free] or wheat.) Composition: C14-22 Alkylalcohols: 75-80%; C12-20 glucosides: 15-25%.
Benefits Makes Lotions with a light texture. Natural Emulsifier that is excellent for Sprays. Stable at pH levels 3-11. Safe Emulsifier - non-GMO; solvent- and preservative-free. Compatible with the majority of active ingredients, such as glycerines, alcohols, pigments, whitening agents, lactic acid, AHA, aloe vera concentrate, mineral filters. Helps the skin’s lipid barrier to be reinforced and thereby helps to stop trans-epidermal water loss. Has a very soft skin feeling. You can use Emulsifier L to make Lotions with a relatively high oil content. You can regulate the thickness by adjusting the quantity of Emulsifier L, solid Fats like Shea Butter and Xanthan Gum, Lactic Acid, Aloe Vera Concentrate and AHA Complex. No specific restrictions for cosmetic use in EU, US and Japan. It needs always to be added and heated in Fat Stage.
Recommended dosages and how to use in products Sprays: 1% Lotions: 3-5% Wipes: 1% Restrictions when using Emulsifier L Sprays containing Emulsifier L become naturally milky and white, looking like skimmed milk. This is because when you blend fats/oils with water, the mixture will become naturally white, just as full cream and skimmed milk are white – they are both natural, stable emulsions, which come from a cow. To clarify a ‘milky spray’ you need something chemically similar to what we use to spray our car windows. So, generally, all sprays that are clear will contain this chemical. As you realise, Aromantic won’t sell chemicals such as this and when you realise what’s in clear sprays, maybe you’ll choose to have a milky spray instead! The smart way to sell a milky spray is in an opaque bottle. You can also colour your sprays with our Water-Based Colours. I find Emulisifer L does not work well for making creams. When detergents are added they can easily separate a lotion made with Emulsifier L. Storage 2 years (see label for actual best before date). Store cool and dark.
Related/Synergistic products For stabilising Sprays Add up to 0.3% of Xanthan Gum in your Emulsifier L recipes.
For stabilising Lotions Add up to 3% of Cocoa/and or up to 2% Shea Butter in your Emulsifier L recipes.
For stabilising Lotions and Sprays You can replace the Vegetable Oil with Sunflower Oil in your Emulsifier L recipes. Because of its natural lecithin content, it is an emulsifier. Replace AND IN VEGETAL

Method for making Sprays and Lotions made with Emulsifier L Fat Stage: Heat the Fat Stage ingredients in a double boiler until all of the ingredients have melted and the temperature has risen to 75 - 80°C. There is no need to use a whisk at this stage. Water Stage: After boiling the Spring Water, measure it according to the Recipe and pour it into a beaker with the pre-measured Glycerine, which you have put into a separate double boiler. Measure the Xanthan Gum and sprinkle over the water, whisking vigorously. Make sure that there are no lumps. Then allow the mixture to heat to 75-80°C. When both Fat and Water Stages are over 75°C (check with a Thermometer), remove both double boilers from the hob, keeping the Water Stage mixture hot by leaving it on the top half of the double boiler. Now pour the melted Fat Stage into the Water Stage in a thin, steady stream, while continuously whisking the mixture from side to side for 5 minutes. If necessary, use a spatula to scrape the mixture from the sides of the saucepan (or bowl). Allow the mixture to cool, stirring all the time. You can speed up by the cooling process by replacing the hot water in the double boiler with COLD water. In the process of cooling down, the mixture becomes a Spray/Lotion and will reach its most viscous consistency when it is has cooled down to room temperature. Third Stage: Stir in the Third Stage ingredients when the mixture has cooled to under 40˚C. Fourth Stage: Continue stirring until the mixture has cooled to under 25°C, then thoroughly mix in the Essential Oils. Add Lactic Acid if you are using Preservative K. Pour the Spray/Lotion into bottles and label. Troubleshooting Sprays & Lotions made with Emulsifier L Follow the recipe. Heat it to above 75 Degrees Celsius. Mix both stages together for 5 minutes once heated for 5 minutes. Always pour fat stage ingredients into water stage as it is an oil-in-water emulsion. If the emulsion separates, sprinkle a little Xanthan Gum (up to 0.3% for Sprays and up to 0.5%) over the mixture little by little and blend with an electric blender until you get the viscosity you like. If the bottle spray cap clogs up you have added too much Emulsifier L, fatty Butters or Xanthan Gum. Good luck and enjoy making your creams and lotions!
