What is it?

Organic comfrey roots that are extracted into glycerine by a proprietary process. This unique extraction process is qualified by the Soil Association and it results in an extract, which is not as sticky as purely glycerine extracts. It is sterilised by filtration so no preservative is necessary to keep the extract (but obviously add preservatives as appropriate to the products you are making it if using it in recipes). By extracting an active raw material into glycerine, you get both the benefit of the active raw material and also the benefit of the glycerine’s humectant moisturiser properties, making this a 2-in-1 moisturiser/active product. Has a feint herbal smell and it is a beige/yellow colour.

Action/Benefits

• Comfrey contains: allantoin; approx. 30% carbohydrate; tannins; and small quantities of essential oil; (fructans); pyrrolizidine alkaloids; triterpenes; rosmarinic acid.
• Plants like comfrey, which have high carbohydrate content, are considered to rejuvenate the skin and to have healing, soothing and moisture retaining properties. They are good for rough, damaged skin and can, with time, alleviate wrinkling and enable skin tissue to regain its youthful elasticity.
• The tannins and rosmarinic acid have an astringent and anti-inflammatory effect.
• Comfrey is mainly used externally to treat inflammation and to stimulate wound and bone fracture healing.
• Comfrey is a special beauty herb due to the high content of the phytochemical allantoin, which promotes skin cell regeneration, stimulates the growth of new cells and helps sensitive skin to become more resilient, counteracting dryness and cracking.
• Used for treating: tissue damage;  bone infections; gout; inflammations; sprains; tendonitis; aches and pains; haemorrhages; post-operative wounds; sores which do not heal; eczema; psoriasis; varicose ulcers; boils; and varicose veins.
• Comfrey's name derives from the Latin ‘con firma’, i.e. ‘with strength’, from the belief that it could heal broken bones.
• Long used to heal wounds, the comfrey leaves and roots have been used to cure ailments ranging from stubborn leg ulcers to broken bones, and hence its common name of ‘boneset’ or ‘knitbone’. Comfrey has been used for centuries for its wound healing properties.

• It is a good replacement for plain glycerine moisturiser in sensitive skin products.
• You can also mix it together in hydrolates to make toners for sensitive skin.
• Particularly good to add to compresses, shaving products, shampoos, foam baths and skin toners.

Water or oil-soluble?

Water-soluble.

Can I add it to oil serums or ready-made products?

You cannot add it to purely oil-based blends as it will separate but you can mix it into already-made products such as creams.

Dosage: 3-6% in all water-based products.

Storage and shelf life

2 years (see label for best before date). Store cool and dark.
