Organic Cucumber Glycerol Extract

What does this mean?

Fresh, whole organic cucumbers are extracted by a proprietary process that results in an extract which has a nice, subtle cucumber smell. It is sterilised by filtration and is not as sticky as glycerin on its own.

Inci:Glycerin, Aqua, Cucumis sativus (Cucumber) Fruit Extract

A clear, mobile liquid with a hint of yellow and a slight odour.
There is no preservative added so be sure to keep the bottle tightly closed as much as possible to keep fungal spores out.
The extract also contains amino acids, proteins and lipids.
As this is a natural product, there may be some changes in colouration, cloudiness or sediment.
The individual materials that make up Cucumber Glycerol Extract are listed on the Cosmetic Ingredient Database (CosIng) here.
Cucumber extract naturally contains a host of constituents that are beneficial for skin at the cellular level, including the minerals magnesium and potassium (which support the skin’s moisture retention and regulation), Vitamin C and the phytochemical caffeic acid (antioxidant benefits).
The lutein within cucumber can help counteract melanogenesis, the process that can lead to skin pigmentation/discolouration.
The silica content will help reduce wrinkles and fine lines by giving a boost to the skin’s collagen.

Skin Care
The glycerin part of the Cucumber Glycerol Extract is a very good humectant that keeps the skin moisturised.

Add to toners and facial spritzes. Works very well when combined with floral waters.
Add to gels, lotions and creams to help reduce freckles and tighten open pores.

Use in anti acne facial washes, cleansers and toners to tighten the pores and encourage the removal of dead skin cells.
The desquamation properties naturally within the product mean it can aid the skin's natural shedding of its outer layer during cell regeneration, helping it to look fresh and revitalised.
It is also an emollient and is soothing to irritated skin.
Its astringent properties will help firm the skin and counter signs of aging.
Hair Care
As an astringent, it will help to tone an oily scalp.
Use at 3% to 6%. It is safe to use at higher amounts but there is a possibility that the end product may feel a little sticky.
Water soluble so cannot be used in oil only blends.
Once opened do not leave the cap off the bottle whilst you are working and after use, squeeze some of the air out of the bottle to reduce potential oxidation and seal tightly.

Historical Information
The cucumber, from the gourd family, is believed to be native to India.
As a popular culinary vegetable it has been cultivated in France since the 9th century, England since the 14th century, and in North America from the mid-16th century onwards.
Traditionally cucumber slices have been used in homemade eye compresses and face masks as cucumber naturally contains ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) and caffeic acid.
These nutrients help to soothe skin irritations and reduce swelling, which is why it has been used directly on the skin.
