Ahydrolat made by steam distillation of the freshly cut and partially dried twigs of organic Hamamelis Virginiana. It’s a strong antioxidant and a classic, astringent skin toner.

PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

A colourless to very pale yellow liquid that is very fluid made by steam distillation of thefreshly cut and partially dried twigs of organic Hamamelis Virginiana. Afterwards, organic ethanol has been added to improve the keeping qualities of the hydrosol.

Hydrosols are very prone to fungal contamination. Store them in the ‘fridge if you can and never leave the tops off the bottles whilst you are working.
  • Use 1% to 100%. However, it is very potent so you may find 20% is quite adequate to work well. Always dilute further if using it with babies.
  • Water soluble so cannot be used in oil only products. It can be used in small amounts in water based gels that will hold it in suspension.
  • Heat stable so can be used in Stage 2 (water stage) when making creams and lotions.
This hydrolat has had no broad spectrum preservative added to its bottle, so please take care to not contaminate it during use.

Blend with other hydrolats / hydrosols at the recommended dilutions for refreshing and tonifying facial mists.

Excellent to use in a gel blended with Anti Acne Active Toner and Vitamin B3.

HOW TO USE IT

Skin Care
  • Witch Hazel Hydrolat removes excess oil from the skin and tightens the pores due to its astringent qualities. Use it in toners, serums, creams and lotions in products for acne prone skin for its antibacterial qualities.
  • It is excellent to add to men’s shaving products and is very effective at reducing the incidence of ingrown hairs. It’s very soothing and cooling for razor burn and could be included in after shaving gels.
  • Witch Hazel Hydrolat helps to reduce inflammation and swelling especially from mild sports injuries and muscular strains.
  • It contains antioxidants and tannins, both of which are very beneficial in anti aging products. Use in toners, serums, gels, masks, creams and lotions.
  • Witch Hazel Hydrolat can lighten the colour of stretch marks and reduce some of the puckering appearance. Include in creams and lotions for stretch marks.
  • It is calming for insect bites and other minor skin irritations and can be used neat in a spray for that purpose.
  • A 10% Witch Hazel Hydrolat lotion can reduce the irritation from sunburn quite significantly. Be careful not to use more than that as it will feel tight on the skin.
  • It calms and soothes haemorrhoids when blended with other ingredients.
Hair Care
  • There is no direct hair care usage but Witch Hazel Hydrolat soothes and calms a sensitive scalp and stops itching.

TRADITIONAL USE

Traditional Aromatherapy Uses
Traditionally used by qualified aromatherapists as a cleanser to remove oil and grease from the skin prior to further treatments. Also widely used to bring out bruising. Attempts to make an essential oil from the plant yielded such a small amount of oil it was not viable.

Historical Information
Used by indigenous Americans for centuries, witch hazel decoctions were part of every community’s first aid kit against cuts, bruises, bites and general infections.
During the 14th Century, an alchemist used Witch Hazel Hydrolat as the solvent for infusing a range of herbs and, after straining it, the product was such an excellent skin care toner that it became known as the Queen of Hungary’s favourite beauty product.

Legend has it that it imbued her with such beauty, that a 25 year old Grand Duke proposed to her when she was 70.
