Emulsifying Wax (BTMS)

What does this mean?

Inci:Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium Methosulfate

A primary emulsifier that does not need any further modifiers, stabilisers or thickeners to make superb creams and lotions for the face, body and the hair.

This is BTMS which is the premium emulsifying wax for luxury products.
It is sold as white to slightly yellow-coloured, waxy pellets naturally derived from Rapeseed Oil and Palm Oil.
The vegetable sources are certified Non-GM and are not irradiated.
It has a pH of 5 to 7.
The individual materials that make up Emulsifying Wax are listed on the Cosmetic Ingredient Database (CosIng) here.
Although we found many suppliers claiming a vegetable base for this and even having the same INCI name, our research showed they were, in fact, tallow-based (animal fat).
We eventually found this version which has no animal materials at all.

Oil soluble so use in Stage 1 when making creams and lotions.
When ready, pour Stage 1 into Stage 2 to create an oil-in-water emulsion. See recipes for details.
Use 1% to 10% in formulations.
We suggest 3% to 5% with 3% oils for a light lotion.
6% to 10% with up to 20% oils will give a thicker cream.
Using solid fats as part of the oil phase will also add extra thickness.
Skin Care
A fantastic emulsifier for all skin care products leaving a silky and powdery feel on the skin.
It imparts softness and smoothness along with excellent hydration.
It produces stable emulsions that can cope with the addition of tinctures as well as more challenging ingredients like AHA’s and Hyaluronic Acid.
When used at the maximum with solid fats, it can make a body butter texture that is as good as any butters-only recipe with the added benefit of being able to include water-soluble actives as well.
When used at the lower percentages, it makes very elegant lotions that can be used as serums for anti ageing products.

Hair Care
It is an excellent hair conditioner when made up into a cream or lotion even before any actives are added.
It is extremely mild so can be used for leave in and scrunch type conditioners.
Use in hair conditioners, detanglers and deep conditioning hair packs.
Very effective on coarse and frizzy hair making it softer and more flexible as well as improving wet combing and detangling.
It is substantive to fine, flyaway hair and imparts excellent body whilst curly hair will have greater spring and curl retention.
