Natural Roll On Deodorant

Image of woman applying natural roll-on deodorant under arms

Anti-perspirants are designed to block sweat from coming out of the body. We believe this to be unhealthy as the body is designed to sweat and it is part of a healthy elimination process. However, we do understand that sometimes people need a deodorant. This does not stop the body from sweating but it does slow down the bacterial breakdown of the sweat which is what eventually causes the bad smell.

We prefer to use Deocrystal Stone Powder instead (INCI Name: Potassium Alum). This is a natural deodorant that has a molecular size that is too large to be absorbed into the skin. It stays on the surface where it inhibits bacterial growth, thus giving a deodorant effect.

Stage 1
75% Boiling Spring Water
0.2% Konjac Glucomannan Powder

Stage 2
8% Deocrystal Stone Powder

Stage 3: (below 40°C)
8% Aloe Vera Concentrate
4% Lemon Ester
2.5% Castor Oil
1% Preservative 12
0.8% Essential Oils of your choice
0.5% Farnesol
100% Total
Grape Seed Oil

Method:
  • Weigh the water and pour into a bowl. Weigh the Konjac Glucomannan powder and sprinkle over the water to cover the surface then whisk vigorously for a few seconds only. This is meant to be a very thin gel. If you whisk too long, you will get a thick gel that is no use for this product.
  • Crush the Deocrystal Stone Powder into the gel until it is dissolved.
  • Cool down to below 40°C then stir in the remaining ingredients, don't whisk. Bottle into a roll on bottle and label.
  • The essential oils should be chosen for their deodorant qualities such as Lavender, Patchouli, Cypress and Ylang Ylang.

I have made this natural deodorant so many times now. I can honestly say it’s the best I’ve ever used! As a family we are very conscious of what we put on our bodies and I make my own shampoo bars and soap. Prior to this I’ve never been able to find an effective anti-perspirant/deodorant. Last summer was the test and both hubby and son have been singing its praises ever since. This has worked well after a full day of work and after several hours hiking with no odour or wet armpits. I know it’s listed as a deodorant but it is really effective! Result!

Thank you for your enquiry.

Please see the below response from our Research and Development Team;

“If you notice that one of the Stage 1 ingredients is boiling water, it will be slightly less than that after you have added the next two ingredients. Stirring it all to dissolve will also drop the temperature a little – but it will still be very hot! It needs to then be cooled down as some of the Stage 3 ingredients are damaged by that level of heat.”

Thank you for your enquiry.

Please see the below response from our Research and Development Team;

“The pH needs to be low enough to make the skin inhospitable for bacterial growth. A pH of 3.49 or 4.4 would be low enough to prevent bacterial growth. Bacteria will grow best at a pH of 5-8 so we would advise you to not increase the pH of your deodorant more.”

Hello. I made this deodorant yesterday and loved. Than you for sharing. I have a question: the ph of the deodorant was 3.49. Is it ok? I used 0.6 g of caustic soda to bring it to 4.40. Which ph is best for this product?

“We have not formulated a solid stick deodorant so do not know if the finished product would be stable with the rest of the ingredients you are making the solid stick with, sorry.”

Hello,
I was wondering if you could use the Deocrystal stone power In a solid deodorant stick?

Thank you for your enquiry, please read the below response from our research
and development team;

“It is unfortunate that you are allergic to Aloe Vera as we have no ideal alternative.
The Aloe Vera is included to help lower the pH of the product which then lowers the pH of the skin making it less hospitable to bacterial growth. It also acts as a buffer to soothe the skin.
We suggest adding that 8% to the water instead, making that total 81%. However this does mean that the product will be less effective.”

Hello there, I would love to make this deodorant, however, sadly I am allergic to Aloe Vera. Any ideas on what I could replace the aloe with?
Thank you
Kitty

Thank you for your email, please read the below response from our research and development team;

“This is something that can happen sometimes. Try stick blending the solution when you are dissolving the Deocrystal Stone Powder to see if that will help it to fully dissolve.”

Kind Regards

despite dissolving the potassium alum, there still remains a residue, when it is cooled down. Is that normal? Apart from that, the product is perfect

thanks
