Mike's testing and formulating with Sucragel AOF Bio has led to creating a Masterclass on the use of the product. It's a very exciting product with which you can make up to 100% organic products! You can use Sucragel AOF Bio (Organic) in creams, lotions, cleansers, bath oils, and scrubs and no heating needed! It is a very versatile emulsifier - no other product we know of thickens oils the way it does and you can make a wide range of products with it, from sprayable milks to the thickest body butters!

Sucragel AOF Bio is a 100% natural, preservative-free, oil-thickening and emulsifying ingredient based on sugar chemistry. The emulsifier and oil-thickener is composed of oil, water, glycerine and Sucrose Laurate. It is a hazy, pale yellow liquid gel produced in the United Kingdom. Produced in the United Kingdom so has a low carbon footprint.

Concept

Sucragel AOF Bio (Organic) is based on a particular sugar ester, sucrose laurate, which is one of the most interesting and versatile sugar esters, but also one of the most difficult to use. By blending this product into a base with recognisable, natural ingredients, a truly functional product results.
Sugar esters are made by combining sucrose with a fatty acid via an esterification reaction. There are many grades available and they are used in the food, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries. They are predominantly used as emulsifiers, although they do have other unique properties, such as being able to form stable oily gels, which emulsify on contact with water. They are extremely mild and have a long history of safe use. Sucrose laurate is suitable for use in organically certified products.

Usage Guidelines

Sucragel AOF Bio (Organic) is an emulsifier and oil thickening agent; it can also be used on its own. It has been developed for use at room temperature but can be used at elevated temperature if needed (up to 80°C) for e.g. when using a solid butter such as cocoa butter in your recipe. Always add the oil phase into the Sucragel AOF Bio (Organic) first and if needed, add the water phase afterwards.

Dosage: use between 6% and 99%. The most common dosage for making creams and lotions is 6-8%. Dosage for oily gels is 20-25% (used together with 75-80% vegetable oils and other actives).

These are tried and tested recipes developed by Mike Harmon in 2012.

Rinse Off Cleanser

Stage 1
10ml/g/% Castor Oil
63ml/g/% Olive Oil
1g/ml/% Vitamin E Oil Simulated Natural (Undiluted)
0.5ml/g% (12 drops per 100ml of product) Petitgrain Essential Oil
0.25 ml/g/% (6 drops per 100ml of product) Rose Geranium Essential Oil
0.25 ml/g/% (6 drops per 100ml of product) Palmarosa Essential Oil

Stage 2
25ml/g/% Sucragel AOF Bio (Organic)

Method
1. Combine all the pre-measured Stage 1 ingredients together in a beaker.
2. In a separate beaker, get the pre-measured Stage 2 Sucragel emulsifier moving using an electric mixer with dough hooks. Alternatively to do this by hand, use a spatula to very briskly stir the Sucragel until the texture resembles runny custard.
3. Add the combined Stage 1 ingredients in small amounts ensuring the oil is fully absorbed before you add a little bit more into the Sucragel emulsifier. It will thicken up into a waxy gel but it is important to take your time slowly adding the oils stage or the gel will separate later.

How to use

  • Work the gel into the skin, then rinse with water. The skin will be cleansed and beautifully hydrated. Will remove eye make-up as well.
  • Stir in 5% of an exfoliant like jojoba peeling grains or apricot kernel powder to make the gel into a scrub.

Method

2. In a separate beaker, get the pre-measured Stage 2 Sucragel emulsifier moving using an electric mixer with dough hooks. Alternatively to do this by hand, use a spatula to very briskly stir the Sucragel until the texture resembles runny custard.
3. Add the combined Stage 1 ingredients in small amounts ensuring the oil is fully absorbed before you add a little bit more into the Sucragel emulsifier. It will thicken up into a waxy gel but it is important to take your time slowly adding the oils stage or the gel will separate later.

How to use

  • Drop a teaspoon of the waxy gel into your bath water and it will instantly emulsify and turn into a bath milk.
  • Soak and enjoy!

1g/1% (20 drops using small 0.7mm dropper) Preservative Eco

Method
1. Combine the pre-measured Stage 1 ingredients together in a beaker.
2. In a separate beaker, get the pre-measured Sucragel moving with an electric mixer and dough hook attachments and very slowly feed in the oils IN STAGES to make the initial oily gel. This takes time and more oil should only be added when the oil that you've fed in has been absorbed by the Sucragel. The oily gel will look glossy on the surface. Alternatively, to do this by hand, use a spatula to very briskly stir the Sucragel until the texture resembles runny custard.
3. Separately to this, sprinkle the pre-measured Konjac Glucomannan Powder over the surface of the spring water in a bowl and then briefly whisk it to dissolve any lumps.
4. Then sprinkle the pre-measured Xanthan Gum over the surface and beat again.
5. Slowly feed the Stage 3 gel into the oily gel stirring fast all the time.
6. Put into jar/s and label.
