St. John's Wort Oil (Organic)

21% INCI Name ORG N Hypericum perforatum, Olea europea Description Macerated in sunflower oil. A dry oil which has a warming and relaxing effect. Good for sensitive and sunburnt skin. Softening for dry and mature skin. Keeps for 2-3 years. Skin Care This is a macerated herbal oil, which has a dark, reddish-brown colour from the hypericin found in the flowers. You can see the hypericin in the petals, as it looks like tiny, blood-coloured islands on the yellow-orange petals. The flowers or just-opened buds are usually used in macerated oils. In Europe, St. John’s wort was used by herbalists for the topical treatment of wounds and burns. St. John’s wort soothes irritations of the skin; with generally beneficial effects as the herb has calming properties. St. John’s wort is mostly used externally in the form of macerated herbal oil, an infusion or tincture, but these preparations are increasingly being added to creams, lotions and ointments. Use antiviral/anti-inflammatory and healing ointments, creams, treatment oils or gels for its antiviral, antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and astringent properties. These products can be used for the treatment of first degree burns, sunburn, cuts, scrapes, bruises, boils, minor skin irritations and inflammations, eczema, rheumatic and muscular aches and pains associated with the nervous system. Excellent for products for sensitive skin, easily irritated skin and infected acne or spots. Add to after-sun products such as creams, gels and treatment oils for its soothing effects on the skin and sunburn. Good in baby products for calming nappy rashes, sensitive or inflamed skin. Cooking and Home Remedy It can be heated but because of the macerated herbs it is best to use under 40°C/104°F. This is a sedative herb which promotes relaxation. It is also good for relieving upset stomachs. Use up to 15% in a dressing with more neutral oils such as pure sunflower, thistle oil or rice bran. Contraindication Important, please read before using St. John’s wort oil. St. John’s wort oil is never added to before sun or sun tanning products because, while St. John’s Wort oil is soothing to the skin, it also makes the skin photosensitive. This means that the skin shouldn’t be exposed to the sun after St. John’s wort has been applied externally in the form of an ointment, oil, cream, compress or lotion. Even taking it internally may make fair-skinned people more sensitive to the sun. Hypericin promotes blood circulation in the skin and activates the finer capillaries. Related Products For sunburn and burns Mix St. John’s wort oil with calendula and evening primrose oils; megadoses of vitamin E; and alongside aloe vera gel.  For general healing purposes Blend St. John’s wort oil with calendula, comfrey and arnica oils. If you have this blend in your home, you have a very good blend for general healing  purposes. In Baby Oils Blend St. John’s wort oil with calendula  and rosehip oils.
