Overview

Introduction to making your own Men’s Grooming Products. Many of our happy students have asked us to produce a course for the burgeoning male grooming market. Men’s skin care products is the fastest growing sector in the beauty industry today and the clients have a large amount of disposable income. Many of these Men’s Grooming products will cross over into their other markets, e.g. shaving products are not restricted to men alone and healing balms can be used for a number of purposes.

Students of this one-day intensive course will receive practical experience in men’s grooming products, making and taking home: aftershave cream, aftershave spray, shaving oil, hair/beard styling wax, aftershave balm, clear mascara/eyebrow tamer, aerosol pump of shaving foam. The products that you will make are professionally made and can be used for your own use or sold to your therapy clients or in commercially to the public. A comprehensive range of course materials are provided for each student and the products made during the practical sessions are for students to take home.

Note: this course can be attended without first having to attend any of our other courses.

Who this course will benefit:

Beauty therapists/ salons/ spas/ hairdressers/ barbers/ aromatherapists/ cosmetologists (US) and others who work in the field of healing or beauty who want to enhance the service they provide to their clients with an add-on service of providing tailor-made products or who want to create their own range of spa products to sell to the public.

Course contents:

Theory session:

The day begins with an introduction to the raw materials that are useful for the male grooming market. There is an overview of how the male market needs to be addressed in a different way to the female market even though you will find many of the products you will learn about can cross over both markets.

Practical session:
Following the demonstration by Mike of making an aftershave cream, questions can be asked before the students are divided into groups of 4 per table. The group makes two types of 200ml of cream which can be fragranced with essential oils. Students are able to take home 2 x 25ml jars of cream each (1 of each type) as we make two types of aftershave creams and swap them amongst the groups.

Then Mike will demonstrate the technique for making aftershave sprays and the same groups will make 2 types of 200ml of aftershave sprays. Students will take home 2 x 25ml spray bottles of aftershave spray (one of each type).

After a tea break, Mike will show how a shaving oil is blended. The students will make 2 types of shaving oil and will take home 4 x 10ml bottles of shaving oil (1 of each type).

After lunch the same procedure is followed, this time making a hair / beard styling wax and an aftershave balm, followed by a clear mascara / eyebrow tamer.

After the last tea break, Mike will demonstrate how a foam shave foam is prepared and students will make their own.

The day is completed with a Questions & Answers session and the handing out of certificates.

NOTE: Before learning how to make a product Mike will discuss the benefits of the product and demonstrate the exact utensils and raw materials required. ALL raw materials and utensils are provided and students usually work in groups of 4 per table. A printed hand-out of the recipe and technique is also given to each student at the beginning of making any product. This enables the student to focus upon the 'hands-on' aspect of the session and ensures that each participant leaves with a complete set of notes and recipes for future reference.

• Recipe brochure for specific creams for men and men’s cleansing products
• Recipe brochure for appropriate essential oils suitable for men’s products plus 10 different essential oil blends you can use for yourself
• 4 x 25ml jars of aftershave cream
• 4 x 25ml spray bottles of aftershave spray
• 4 x 10ml bottles of shaving oil
• 2 x 25ml jars of hair / beard styling wax
• 2 x 25ml jars of aftershave balm
• 2 x 10ml tubes of clear mascara / eyebrow tamer
• 1 x 100ml aerosol pump of shaving foam
• A Completion Certificate will be handed out after successfully completing the course.
