Comfrey Roots (Organic)

Dried comfrey roots used for healing, soothing & moisture-retaining & cell regeneration properties in natural skin and hair care products.

Comfrey Roots (Organic)

Latin / CI (if applicable)

CI ORG W N
Latin Symphytum spp.

Description

What is it?

Roots from Croatia. Comfrey's name derives from the Latin ‘con firma’, i.e. ‘with strength’, from the belief that it could heal broken bones. Long used to heal wounds, the Comfrey leaves and roots have been used to cure ailments ranging from stubborn leg ulcers to broken bones, and hence its common name of ‘boneset’ or ‘knitbone’. Comfrey has been used for centuries for its wound healing properties. Parts used are the leaves and roots.

Action/Benefits

  • Plants like Comfrey, which have high carbohydrate content, are considered to rejuvenate the skin and to have healing, soothing and moisture retaining properties. They are good for rough, damaged skin and can, with time, alleviate wrinkling and enable skin tissue to regain its youthful elasticity.
  • Comfrey is mainly used externally to treat inflammation and to stimulate wound and bone fracture healing.
  • Used for treating: tissue damage;  bone infections; gout; inflammations; sprains; tendonitis; aches and pains; haemorrhages; post-operative wounds; sores which do not heal; eczema; psoriasis; varicose ulcers; boils; and varicose veins.
  • Comfrey is a special beauty herb due to the high content of the phytochemical Allantoin which promotes skin cell regeneration, stimulates the growth of new cells and helps sensitive skin to become more resilient, counteracting dryness and cracking.

Which products to use it in

  • Comfrey can be used in Baths
  • Poultices and Compresses
  • Macerated Oils
  • Ointments, Creams & Lotions
  • Skin Toners
  • Shampoos, Foam Baths, and Shaving products.

Water or oil-soluble?

Water soluble.

Can I add it to ready-made products?

Not appropriate.

How to use in products

  • Add a strong Decoction to your Foam Bath and Cream Recipes.
  • For a Wet Compress, boil 20-25g dried Comfrey roots or leaves, or make a fresh root Decoction to apply overnight for fracture and sprain healing.

For an in depth article on how to use Herbs in your products/Compresses please refer to the Skin Care Library at the bottom of this page.

Storage and Shelf Life

2-3 years. Store in the dark and keep dry.

Related/Synergistic Products

  1. As the natural allantoin in Comfrey is very softening, it is beneficial to use in all sensitive skin products. Combine it with Comfrey Glycerol Extract and you have added a moisturiser with the Comfrey effect as well, giving a two-in-one product.
  2. Comfrey is generally very good to combine with Calendula products.
  3. When treating sprains and fractures, Comfrey Leaves are excellent to combine with Arnica Tincture.
